Travelling Cup of Memory

PROVINCE OF CHESHIRE & NORTH WALES CUP OF MEMORY

The Provincial Travelling Cup of Memory

In 2018 the then Provincial Prior, Right Eminent Knight Dr Anthony Mathie, instigated a Travelling Cup of Memory to be challenged for by Preceptories in the Province of Cheshire and North Wales. The aim was and remains to promote visiting by and to Preceptories within the Province and to encourage Knights to extend their knowledge of the Order.

Any Preceptory holding the Cup shall use it for each Candidate it Installs into the Order of the Temple, and shall write his name and date of Installation in the Cup Of Memory Book of Record.

The Provincial Travelling Cup of Memory Rules 2023 set out revised arrangements regarding Challenges for the Cup.

A Challenge may be made for the Cup at a meeting of the Holding Preceptory or of its attached Priory.

However, a Preceptory cannot be faced with a Challenge during the six months from when it receives the Cup unless (a) the Holding Preceptory is the Preceptory of St George No.318; (b) the Holding Preceptory agrees; or (c) the Provincial Prior grants permission.

There is no set way in which a Challenge can be made. The Challenge Script is merely a suggestion but it adds colour and a sense of occasion to what might otherwise be a lacklustre exercise.

In any event, it is imperative that a Challenging Preceptory and the Holding Preceptory agree on how the Challenge is to be made.

Whenever a successful Challenge is made for the Cup, a photograph should be taken of the Eminent Preceptor of the Holding Preceptory with the Knights of the Challenging Preceptory – the photograph may be sent to the Provincial Webmaster for inputting on the Provincial Website.

At the outset, the Provincial Travelling Cup of Memory was granted to Grosvenor Preceptory No.132.  It was successfully challenged for and passed to the Preceptory of St David No.454, then to the Croes Newydd Preceptory No.603, and then to the Preceptory of St George No.318.

On 11 October 2022 the Eminent Preceptor of the St Hilary Preceptory No.184, E.Kt. John Champney, accompanied by E.Kt. William H. Dunn, P.Prov.Std.B.(V.B.) and Kt. Stephen Goddard, attended the Meeting of the Priory of St.George No.318 at Maesgwyn Hall, Wrexham and, using the Challenge Script, made a successful Challenge for the Cup.

The Preceptory of St Hilary is scheduled to meet at the Masonic Hall, Clifton Road, Birkenhead CH41 2SF on Saturday 29 April and Saturday 16 September 2023 – each Meeting commences at 13.00 hours and is followed by an Afternoon Tea festive board.

Any Knights wishing to attend and partake of the festive board should contact the Preceptory Registrar, E.Kt. William Dunn, P.Prov.Std.B.(V.B.)  [tel: 0151-336-3529; mobile 07840 896326; email: registrar184@btinternet.com]
